Size 15 3/4” x 15 3/4” inches (40 x 40 centimeters)
This was a commission based project which, I undertook in 2007/8. This painting hangs in a restaurant called Grøften situated in Tivoli, a famous amusement park and pleasure garden in Copenhagen, Denmark.
I combined decoupage and acrylic for the first time in this project. I used Grøften paper napkin as a reference. Painted on a cotton canvas using acrylic medium and decoupage, set against a background of dark green. The letters displayed on the top are constructed using stencil with mod podge and then painted after with silver acrylic paint.
The construction of the hot air balloon was done using the original napkin paper and then moulded into a shape of the balloon using fingers only. The basket was created using matchsticks trimmed and cut out really fine and carefully glued onto the canvas using the hot glue gun. The basket was then painted using brown umber acrylic paint to give it that old rustic wooden look and to finish it off, I used the base of a tealight candle, cut out two strips and placed them on top of the painted matchsticks to give the basket a more desirable look.
Cotton canvas, brushes round and flat, artist quality acrylic paint, mod podge, glue gun, paper napkin, stencil, matchsticks, tealight base, colours used green, silver umbre brown blended with black.
