The Great Buddha of Kamakura in Japan is what inspired me to do this painting. A bronze statue dating back as far as 1252, still has remnants of gold around its ears.
Painted vertical on a cotton canvas using acrylic medium, set against a background of brown and dark grey thick and thin vertical gestural lines. I wanted to show the Buddha in a more vibrant and colourful light. The calmness and tranquility on his face brings sense of serenity and harmony.
"Om Mani Padme Hum" means "The Jewel is in the Lotus". It is said that all the teachings of the Buddha is contained in the mantra. The mantra is painted in gold and is also shown in Sanskrit, Hindhi and English.
Cotton canvas, brushes round and flat, artist quality acrylic paint, colours used yellow ochre, lemon yellow cadmium, raw umbre, white, black and gold. It's an original. Signed and dated.
